The great landscape gardener of the 18th century Lancelot 'Capability' Brown is often thought of as an advanced pioneer of his time. His success was generated from his naturalistic style of landscape design and the nature of his business. He was the head of a complex business that could supply clients with a whole design 'package', which included new greenhouses, kitchen gardens and land drainage schemes.

There were also many other landscape designers in Georgian England, yet Brown’s business and success was more commercially prominent. This book explores the nature and organisation of Brown’s business and draws insightful comparisons with similar providers of 'taste' such as the Adam brothers, Thomas Chippendale and Josiah Wedgwood.

A valuable source for students and scholars as it distinguishes the work of Brown from that of his rivals and followers. Beautifully illustrated with over 120 images, this book uncovers the distinctive style of Brown’s works. However, there is no evidence to prove Brown invented his style - it was simply the product of a noticeably transforming modern world.
